Bird Box by Josh Malerman

This is one of those rare cases where I watched the movie first, then read the book. I loved the movie and didn't know it was based on a book before seeing it. As normally happens when I have seen the movie first, I couldn't help but imagine Sandra Bullock as Malorie and compared the movie to the book.

This was the first book I've read by Josh Malerman and I stayed up into the wee hours of the morning to read this apocalyptic thriller in one sitting. The darkness may have added to the spine-chilling vibe. The story is intriguing, maybe even more so now that we are wearing masks and social distancing in order to not contract COVID-19. Bird Box is so much more. It basically says to COVID-19, "face masks and hasmat suits? Here. Hold. My. Beer!" There is something, - no one knows what it is, what it looks like, but whatever it is - just one look at it and it instantly kills you. It also seems to be something that will lure you if given the chance.

This leaves the characters in Bird Box to isolate themselves, cover their windows and if they are brave enough to attempt going outside to be extra careful and blindfold themselves. People gather in small communities which brings its own pros and cons and is a natural thing to do in a crisis. This is where we meet Malorie, her two chldren, and a group of characters who are trying to survive.

Malorie has learned that there is a place where her and her children could potentially be safe, but the big concerns are how to get there safely and whether or not this place is a reality or a ploy to put her and her children in danger.

I really enjoyed this story and the intensity of it. The sequel, Malorie, is expected to come out in July 2020. I am looking forward to reading it and seeing what happens next.
