Firefly Lane is a fiction novel by American author Kristin Hannah. It is also a recent Netflix series. I think this might be my favourite book of Hannah's so far. It is divided into four parts, all named after songs.
This is a coming of age story about two friends Kate Mularkey and Tully Hart. They couldn’t be any different. Kate feels awkward and feels like she doesn't fit in at school. Tully is the new kid and the popular kid. There’s something mysterious and appealing about her. Tully is hiding secrets about her past and her mother.
Kate and Tully become very good friends. Tully introducing Kate to the popular life, make up, hair and sneaking out. Kate introduces Tully to a stable family life. They dream of growing up together, going to university together and being a reporter/broadcaster team. In University, it is Tully who has the motivation and desire to make it big in the world and Kate wants to get married and have children. Although their friendship is strong, their two worlds start to separate and then a major betrayal threatens to end the friendship forever.
This is a heart wrenching story. I love how Hannah uses pop culture and trends to remind you of the time it's sent in. The main theme is friendship and the choices and sacrifices we make when it comes to career, marriage, children, love and family. There is a sequel to the book called Fly Away that I definitely have to read.
I am halfway through the Netflix series and there are definitely some differences and as usual, I am glad I read the book first, but both tell a great story of two women navigating life in their own way.
