Grief Is The Thing With Feathers by Max Porter is an unusually beautiful book. It’s kind of written in verse and the title itself, I believe is a play on words of the Emily Dickens poem “Hope Is The Thing With Feathers”.
A father and his two sons are in the depths of grief for their wife and mother. The narration alternates between the father, the sons, and Crow, who enters their life and offers wisdom and comfort in their darkest time. The father is a Ted Hughes scholar, and the Crow was part of Hughes’ writing. The symbolism is quite interesting, but what is most astonishing are the beautiful lines throughout the book that capture emotion and grief and hope in our human experiences.
This is such a unique way to tell a story and it is so respectful of the need and process of grieving. It’s a lovely little book, unlike anything I've read before.
