Pride & Prejudice by Jane Austen

I finally read the classic Pride & Prejudice by Jane Austen. This was a buddy read with Christine and Karen who follow my BookTube channel. I was so happy to be reading with them and to chat along the way.

Austen is not an easy read, because you have to get used to the language, there are ten thousand characters and it could be hard to keep everyone organized in my mind, but… I have to admit that I managed to fall in love with Pride & Prejudice. Not only did I enjoy the story and the characters, I loved the humour. I enjoyed the book so much that as soon as I was finished I had to watch the series with Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle and when I finished that I was still smiling from ear to ear. I now get why people love Jane Austen.

This is the story of the Bennet family. Mr. and Mrs. Bennet have five daughters and they are eager - or should I say, Mrs. Bennet is eager, to marry them all off. They have a new neighbour moving in to the estate next door. Mr. Bingley brings in 5000 lbs a year so he would be a good match for one of their daughters. He also has a friend, Mr. Darcy who brings in 10000 lbs a year so the hope is that the girls will be noticed at the ball. Bingley makes a wonderful first impression, not so with Mr. Darcy.

Austen brings in other characters like Mr. Collins and Mr. Wickman. There are rivalries, some broken hearts - although not for long - along the way as the Bennet sisters make their way in society. I loved how each character was so different and brought something to the story.

In the end, I don’t think anyone could be more surprised at how much I enjoyed this more than me, but I do give credit to being able to talk about the novel with people along the way. It definitely helped and I will be more ready to read another Jane Austen novel now too.
