I adored The Dutch House by Ann Patchett. I think it is a real masterpiece.
This is a family drama about family dynamics, loyalty, love, marriage, parenting, life, death, forgiveness and a house that connects all of it. The story is told by Danny who lives in the Dutch House with his older sister Maeve, his father and their staff. They have been abandoned by their mother and feel estranged from their father.
When he remarries and his new wife and her two daughters move in, the estrangement only worsens and eventually Danny and Maeve are forced out of their home. The connection they have to the Dutch House is deep and they sometimes come to sit outside of it, wondering what is going on inside.
I love stories that have places as characters and this is an example of that. It is exceptional in this story. I absolutely loved the relationship between Danny and Maeve. I loved how the story comes full circle and there is a cyclical nature to it. There is a bit of mystery to the story and truths are revealed. It’s such a beautifully written story with many layers about family and home.
