The Glass Hotel by Emily St. John Mandel is on the shortlist for the Giller Prize this year. I will leave a link to videos I did on the longlist and shortlist below so you can check them out if you haven’t seen them already.
This book starts at The Glass Hotel, a high class hotel in British Columbia. Vincent, who is a woman despite the name, is a bartender at the hotel and her half brother Paul also works there. The owner of the hotel Jonathan Alkaitis, is a financial business man. Vincent and Jonathan become a couple. Their relationship is not typical and not as glorious as hoped for. After some time Vincent wants out of her role of being a trophy wife. A Ponzi scheme gives Vincent her out and she begins working on a ship. Then one day she disappears from the ship.
This book is also a ghost story. As we learn about each character and some of their background story we find out how they are connected. We are also introduced to ghosts. Paul sees the ghost of Charlie Woo, Leon - a shipping executive thinks he is being haunted by a ghost when he sees a nasty message that has been written in the glass of the hotel. Jonathan has a ghost visit him in jail and what exactly happened to Vincent? Is she alive? Is she dead? The ghosts in this book were an interesting aspect.
