The Midnight Library by Matt Haig has been getting a lot of hype and I loved the concept for it.
The protagonist, Nora Seed lives a lonely existence with her cat. She has lost her job, she has no friends, and when her cat dies, Nora feels like there’s no reason left to live so she plans to take her own life. But she doesn’t die exactly, instead she wakes up in a library with moving shelves and on those shelves are an infinite number of possibilities. One book is all about the life she lived, but the other books are what her life could have been if she made a different decision. What if she followed a different career path or what if she chose a different relationship. Nora gets to try them all out and fix her regrets. The reader gets to go along for the journey.
When Nora finds a life she likes, she can choose to stay in it, but how will she know and what if she never finds a suitable life for herself; what does all of this really mean for Nora. The novel is really about how we live with our own regrets and what we value most in life.
