If you've followed my blog, instagram or BookTube channel then you are probably already aware that The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett is one of my all time favourite classics. I decided to do a re-read since it has been a long, long, long time.
It remains one of my favourites. I have always loved the story of Mary, an orphan who has to live with her uncle in England after her parents die. I love the portrayal of the house -or should I say, mansion- and then of course, there is a hidden garden that people haven't been in for a decade.
As a child, this book made me appreciate nature in a new way and I could relate, to a certain degree, how much freedom the children had to play and explore.
I love Dickon. I think he is such a gentle soul. Mary and Colin, in my opinion, have similar stories in that they are both neglected in some ways and are spoiled in other ways. There is an entitlement about them. I love how they connect and how Mary gets through to him in ways that no one else can.
I think that the real magic of the book is the way the garden begins to transform and the way Mary and everyone around her transforms too. New life is breathed into the place and its people.
This is totally a nostalgic read for me. It's a classic that I think still has relevance and that special book magic. 😊
