The Waves by Virginia Woolf

The Waves was my first Virginia Woolf novel. This classic is a short little book and the writing is quite unique.

The novel is divided into nine sections. Each section is a time of day which corresponds to a period in the lives of the 6 main characters. From morning when the characters are in day-school to young adulthood, maturity when the characters gather at dinner and finally an entire section from Bernard’s point of view who lets the reader know what happened to everyone.

There’s no dialogue, just streams of consciousness. All six characters are very different, there is grief, mental illness, a love affair and of course the symbols of the waves. The writing is what makes this story so unique, but once you understand who the characters are, it flows easier.

This was a book that after I finished it and continued to think about it, I liked it more. If you like descriptive, poetic writing then you would like this one.
