The Witches of New York by Ami McKay

The Witches of New York is a historical fiction book by Ami McKay which as the title suggests, takes place in New York.

This book takes place in 1880 and the main character is 17 year old Beatrice Dunn who decides to go to the big city to apply for a job at the Tea and Sympathy Store. Eleanor St. Claire and Adelaide Thorn along with Eleanor's pet raven, Perdu run this store and they hire Beatrice.

We get glimpses into the past of these three women to learn how they ended up at this store. Beatrice begins to learn that she has a gift of communicating with spirits. This is encouraged by Eleanor and Adelaide in different ways. Then Beatrice goes missing and Eleanor and Adelaide have to find her.

A heads up that there is some offensive language, so if that's not something you are ok with you might not want to commit to a 500+ page book. If you enjoy a story that has witches, spirits, ghosts, dearlies, curses and magic spells then this you might want to check it out. Most importantly this story has strong ,powerful women who lived in a time when they were seen as risky and dangerous.

For me, this book started off really strong, then it lost some of its momentum and eventually I got back into it and I'm glad I read it.
