I loved everything about This Tender Land by William Kent Krueger. The story is compelling and it was such a beautiful read.
The narrator is Odie. Odie and his brother Albert are two young orphans who have been taken in by the residential school. Odie and Albert are the only two white students and they are mistreated like all of the other students. In the summer of 1932 they decide to escape the horrors of the residential school along with two other friends, Mose and Emmy.
This novel is beautifully written. All of the characters are so well developed. They lean on each other and their strengths in order to survive. These four vagabonds end up on an adventure, much like a modern day Huck Finn story, that is full of interesting characters, love and family, but they can’t run forever. This one gets all the stars.
