Two Trees Make a Forest by Jessica J. Lee

Two Trees Make a Forest by Jessica J. Lee is a memoir. This is a quick read about the author Jessica and her visit to Taiwan where she hikes and learns about her family. Her grandfather was an immigrant to Canada and a letter is found that causes the family to question a few things. The subtitle of the memoir is: Travels Among Taiwan’s Mountains & Coasts in Search of my Family’s Past. I loved the parts of the memoir that were about her family and I could have done with much, much more of that. I also love that we got to travel to Taiwan.

The part that I think takes away from this memoir are the parts where I felt like I was reading a textbook. Now don’t get me wrong, I love details when it comes to setting and creating place for the reader. I also love hiking, but there are long portions of the book that go into great detail about history and flora and fauna that I didn’t think was necessary for the story. The author is an environmental historian but that kind of writing is in my opinion a very different kind of writing than natural history. So there were parts where I kind of zoned out.

Unfortunately, this one fell flat for me and I think there was potential for so much more story that would have drawn me in.
