Up In The Tree by Margaret Atwood

Yes, it's true! Margaret Atwood writes children's books. She has written several books for children in fact, and Up In The Tree was her first, published in 1978. Not only did Atwood write this novel but because publishing children's books was so expensive at the time, the type was set by Atwood and it was illustrated by Atwood.

Up In The Tree is dedicated to Atwood’s daughter who would have been two years old at the time. What I love about this book is that even though it’s simple in many ways, with only three colours, it’s still interesting to look at. We don’t have the entire story - who are these characters, and why are they living in a tree? But that doesn’t matter. I love that there’s a problem, they lose their ladder but they work with nature in order to solve the problem and to continue living in harmony with nature. It’s a simple story with great use of language. The rhyming words would be interesting to kids and although the message is simple, it’s a message that Atwood is passionate about and uses this opportunity to share it with her youngest readers.
