Word Problems by Ian Williams

Word Problems by Ian Williams is another distinctive poetry collection that places Williams among Canada's most respected writers and poets.

Word Problems has all of the things I appreciate in Ian Williams' writing. The structure of the book as a whole and the individual poems are just as important as the words and poems themselves. I always imagine Williams making intentional and deliberate decisions on the structure of his writing. It makes me wonder what came first? The structure? The words? In the end, they are united so one cannot be without the other.

The poems themselves are clever. Many of them make you think, have surprising or twisty endings. You think the poem is about one thing and then you realize that wasn't where it was going at all; it is more profound.

Williams continues his ingenious writing that lets his humour shine while still making an impact on important issues of our time. I can't wait to see what is next from him.
